Quick answer: Hang a dining room chandelier so its lowest point sits 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop on an 8 foot ceiling. Add about 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling height.
The right chandelier height above table is 30 to 36 inches, measured from the bottom of the fixture to the tabletop. That one number decides whether your dining room feels calm and intimate or awkward. Hang it too high and the light floats away from the table. Hang it too low and it blocks the view across the table. Below are the measurements for every ceiling height, table shape and fixture style.

How high should a chandelier hang over a dining table?
A chandelier should hang 30 to 36 inches above a dining table in a room with an 8 foot ceiling. This is the standard most designers and electricians work from. It puts the light close enough to make the table glow while keeping a clear line of sight between people sitting across from each other.
Why this range works:
- Faces stay visible. Seated eye level is roughly 45 to 50 inches from the floor. A fixture that ends about 60 to 66 inches from the floor sits above that line.
- The light lands on the table. The pool of light falls on plates and centerpieces rather than on the walls.
- Nobody hits it. People rarely stand up into a fixture that sits over the middle of the table.
Height works hand in hand with width. A chandelier about one half to two thirds as wide as your table looks right at this height. If you have not chosen a size yet, start with our guide on what size chandelier for your dining table, then come back here to set the drop.

Chandelier height above table by ceiling height
The chandelier height above table grows with the ceiling. The rule of thumb is to add about 3 inches to the 30 to 36 inch range for every foot of ceiling above 8 feet. A taller room has more air above the fixture, so a slightly higher hang keeps the proportions balanced.
| Ceiling height | Bottom of chandelier above the table | Bottom of chandelier from the floor (30 in table) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 30 to 36 in | 60 to 66 in |
| 9 ft | 33 to 39 in | 63 to 69 in |
| 10 ft | 36 to 42 in | 66 to 72 in |
| 11 ft | 39 to 45 in | 69 to 75 in |
| 12 ft | 42 to 48 in | 72 to 78 in |
Treat the table as a range, not a single target. Stay toward the low end if your family likes a cozy, candlelit dinner. Go toward the high end if the fixture is tall or if the room doubles as a homework or work space. For anything above 12 feet, see the high ceiling section below.
How to measure chandelier height over table
Measure chandelier height over table from the lowest point of the fixture, not from the canopy or the top of the frame. On a fixture with hanging crystals, glass globes or a bowl, that lowest point is the bottom of whatever hangs lowest.
- Measure your table. Most dining tables stand 29 to 31 inches tall. Write down the exact number.
- Measure the ceiling. Measure from the floor to the ceiling where the electrical box sits.
- Pick your target. Choose a number from the table above, for example 32 inches over an 8 foot ceiling.
- Do the math. Ceiling height minus table height minus your target gives the total length the fixture should hang from the ceiling, canopy included.
- Test it. Before the final cut of the rod or chain, hold the fixture up or tape a piece of string to the ceiling at the planned length. Sit down and look across the table.
An example: a 96 inch ceiling minus a 30 inch table minus a 33 inch target leaves 33 inches. The chandelier, from the ceiling to its lowest point, should measure about 33 inches overall. Every Yore product page lists the fixture height and drop so you can run this math before you order.
What is the right dining room chandelier height for high ceilings?
With high ceilings, the dining room chandelier height still follows the table, not the ceiling. The fixture should feel connected to the people below it. A chandelier pushed up near a 14 foot ceiling lights the ceiling and leaves the table in shadow.
- Use the 3 inch rule up to about 12 feet. Past that, cap the gap at roughly 48 inches above the table.
- Choose a taller fixture. In a tall room, a chandelier with more vertical presence fills the space better than one with a long bare rod.
- Plan the drop before you order. Most Yore chandeliers can be ordered in a standard length or with an extra 12, 24 or 36 inches of drop. Pick the length when you check out so it arrives ready to hang.
- Vaulted ceilings. Measure from the point where the box sits, not from the highest point of the vault. A sloped ceiling canopy may be needed.

Every Yore chandelier is solid brass, made to order and available with extra drop length for tall rooms.
Shop dining room chandeliers →Does the height of chandelier above dining table change with the style?
Yes, a little. The height of chandelier above dining table shifts with how the fixture spreads its light and how much it blocks the view. Use these adjustments within the standard range.
| Fixture style | Suggested gap over the table | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drum or cone shades | 30 to 33 in | Light points down, so a lower hang makes a clear pool on the table |
| Open arm or candle style | 32 to 36 in | Exposed bulbs can glare if they sit at eye level |
| Glass globes | 32 to 36 in | Soft light spreads wide and does not need to be close |
| Tiered or tall fixtures | 34 to 36 in | A tall body needs extra room to keep sight lines open |
| Linear chandeliers | 30 to 34 in | A low, long profile rarely blocks the view |
| Sputnik or starburst | 30 to 36 in | Open frame lets you see through it |
Open fixtures like a sputnik chandelier can hang at the lower end because you see straight through them. Our sputnik chandelier guide covers that shape in detail.

How high to hang a chandelier over a round or rectangular table?
The vertical rule is the same for every table shape. What changes is where you center the fixture and how many fixtures you use.
- Round and square tables. Center one chandelier over the middle of the table at 30 to 36 inches.
- Rectangular tables. Center the fixture on the length of the table. A table longer than about 72 inches often looks best with a linear fixture like the Carlton Brass Linear Chandelier or with two smaller chandeliers.
- Two fixtures. Hang both at the same height and space them so each sits over one half of the table.
- Extendable tables. Center the light on the table at its everyday size, not with the leaf in.

How high should a chandelier be with no table below it?
Over open floor, keep at least 7 feet between the floor and the bottom of the chandelier. This applies to entries, living rooms and dining rooms where the table may move. In a room with an 8 foot ceiling that leaves only 12 inches for the whole fixture, so a semi flush design is often the better choice.
See our brass flush and semi flush mount lights for low rooms. If the table may move later, plan the electrical box over where the table will live, not the center of the room. A canopy can also be offset with a swag hook if needed.
Low ceiling or open plan? A close to ceiling fixture gives the same warm brass glow without the clearance worries.
Shop flush mount lights →Should pendant lights over a dining table hang at the same height?
Yes. Pendant lights over a dining table follow the same rule as a chandelier: 30 to 36 inches from the bottom of the shade to the tabletop, all at the same height. A row of two or three pendants such as the Barclay Brass Dome Pendant works well over a long table. Browse our dining room pendant lights for options.
If your dining table sits near a kitchen island, the island pendants usually hang a little higher because people stand around an island. Our guide to the brass pendant over kitchen island gives those numbers.
Common chandelier height mistakes to avoid
- Measuring from the canopy. Always measure from the lowest point of the fixture.
- Centering on the room instead of the table. The table is what the light serves.
- Hanging too high. This is the most common mistake. A chandelier floating 45 inches above the table under an 8 foot ceiling looks lost.
- Ignoring the bulbs. Bright bare bulbs at eye level cause glare. Use warm 2700K bulbs and a dimmer.
- Forgetting the wall lights. Sconces in the same room need their own height. Our guide on how high to hang wall sconces has the numbers.
Dimmable LED bulbs are worth it over a dining table. According to the US Department of Energy, LED bulbs use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs. That matters with a many arm fixture.
Every Yore light comes in four finishes: unlacquered brass, polished brass, black and chrome. Unlacquered brass deepens with time, which our guide on what is unlacquered brass explains.

Frequently asked questions
How far should a chandelier hang above a dining table?
Hang it 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop with an 8 foot ceiling. Add about 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling height.
What is the chandelier height over table with a 9 foot ceiling?
Aim for 33 to 39 inches between the bottom of the chandelier and the tabletop.
How high should a chandelier be from the floor?
Over a table, the bottom usually sits 60 to 66 inches from the floor with an 8 foot ceiling. Over open floor, keep at least 7 feet of clearance.
Do you measure chandelier height from the top or the bottom?
From the bottom. Measure from the lowest point of the fixture, including crystals, globes or shades, down to the tabletop.
Can a chandelier hang too low over a table?
Yes. Below about 28 inches it starts to block the view across the table and bright bulbs can sit at eye level.
Can I change the height after installation?
Usually. Chain can be shortened or extended and rods can be swapped. Plan the drop length when you order to avoid extra work.
