Brass Pendant Over Kitchen Island: How Many, How Far Apart and How High

Brass pendant over kitchen island: the Stanton Brass Dome Pendant in solid brass

Quick answer: For most islands, hang two or three pendants 30 to 36 inches above the countertop, about 24 to 36 inches apart center to center. Choose shades of 10 to 16 inches across and keep each one at least 6 inches in from the island ends.

A brass pendant over kitchen island seating is the single fixture that does the most for a kitchen. It lights the prep surface, it marks the island as the heart of the room and it brings warmth to a space full of stone, tile and steel. This guide gives you the numbers that matter: how many pendants to use, how far apart to space them and how high to hang them. It also covers shade shapes and finishes so the light you pick still looks right in twenty years.

What is the best lighting for a kitchen island?

The best lighting for a kitchen island is a row of pendants or one linear pendant that follows the length of the counter. Pendants put the light close to the work surface, where you chop, read recipes and sit for breakfast. Recessed ceiling lights alone tend to leave the island flat and shadowed.

A kitchen island is a freestanding counter you can reach from every side. That makes it the natural focal point of the room. Good island lighting treats it that way: a clear line of light above the counter, backed by general ceiling light and under cabinet light at the perimeter. Our full kitchen island lighting collection gathers every pendant and linear fixture sized for the job.

Why choose a brass pendant over kitchen island seating?

Brass is the warmest metal you can hang in a kitchen. It flatters marble, butcher block, painted cabinetry and terracotta alike. It also brings a note of the old New York kitchen: brass rails, marble counters and pieces built to last for generations.

Every Yore fixture is made of solid brass, never plated, so the color runs all the way through the metal. Our signature finish is unlacquered brass, which slowly deepens into a soft patina near the steam and warmth of a kitchen. If you want to know how that aging works, read our guide to what unlacquered brass is. To keep it looking cared for without stripping its character, see how to clean brass without removing the patina.

A brass island pendant also works with every other metal in the room. Steel appliances, nickel taps and black hardware all sit comfortably next to it.

How many pendants over a kitchen island?

Most islands take two or three pendants. Odd numbers usually look most balanced, so three pendants is the classic answer for an island of 7 to 9 feet. Two pendants suit a shorter island or one with a sink or cooktop in the middle.

Island length Pendants Shade diameter (each)
Up to 5 ft (60 in) 1 large or 2 small 8 to 12 in
5 to 7 ft (60 to 84 in) 2 10 to 14 in
7 to 9 ft (84 to 108 in) 3 10 to 16 in
9 ft and longer 3 or 4 (or one linear pendant) 12 to 16 in

Choosing the shade itself? Our guide to brass and glass pendant lights compares opal and clear glass, globe and dome shapes and how each one lights an island.

These are starting points, not rules. A very wide shade may need one fewer pendant. A small globe may need one more. If the island is long and narrow, a single linear pendant often looks cleaner than four separate shades.

What size pendant for a kitchen island?

Choose a shade that fills roughly a third to a half of the island depth. For a standard island of 36 to 42 inches deep, that means shades of about 12 to 16 inches across. Smaller shades of 8 to 10 inches work in groups of three or four.

Then check the total. Add the shade diameters together and compare the sum with the island length. The pendants should take up about one third to one half of it. Three 14 inch domes over a 96 inch island add up to 42 inches, which sits right in that range. Scale also depends on the room. A tall ceiling can carry larger shades, while a low one calls for something slimmer, such as a Charlton Brass Saucer Pendant with its low, wide profile.

How far apart should pendant lights be over an island?

Pendant lights over an island are usually spaced 24 to 36 inches apart center to center. Leave at least 6 inches between the edge of each end shade and the end of the island so nobody bumps it.

The easiest way to get it right is the section method. Divide the island length by the number of pendants. Then hang one pendant in the middle of each section. For three pendants over a 96 inch island, each section is 32 inches. The pendants sit 32 inches apart and the outer two sit 16 inches in from each end.

How to space and hang three pendants over a kitchen island Front view of an 8 foot kitchen island with three brass dome pendants. The island is split into three equal sections of 32 inches with one pendant centered in each, so the pendants sit 32 inches apart center to center and 16 inches in from each end. The bottom of each shade hangs 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. Three pendants over an 8 foot island 32 in center to center 32 in center to center 16 in 30 to 36 in 96 in island split into 3 equal sections Each pendant hangs at the center of its own section
The section method: divide the island into equal parts and center one pendant in each.
Island length Pendants Center to center From each end
72 in 2 36 in 18 in
84 in 3 28 in 14 in
96 in 3 32 in 16 in
120 in 4 30 in 15 in

Always measure from the center of each shade, then check the gap between shade edges. With 16 inch shades at 28 inches apart, only 12 inches of air remain between them. That can feel crowded, so either step down to a smaller shade or use two pendants. The same logic applies above a table, as our guide to what size chandelier for a dining table explains.

How high to hang pendants over an island?

Hang pendants so the bottom of the shade sits 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. That keeps the light close to the work surface and leaves a clear view across the island.

Ceiling height Bottom of shade above counter
8 ft 30 to 32 in
9 ft 32 to 34 in
10 ft 34 to 36 in
11 ft and higher 36 in, with a larger or taller shade

Sit at the island and stand at it before you fix the height. Seated guests should see each other under the shades. A standing cook should not see the bare bulb. Tall households can raise pendants a couple of inches. Ask your electrician to hold each pendant at the planned height before the cord or rod is cut. The same eye level thinking applies to wall lights, covered in our guide on how high to hang wall sconces.

Which brass island pendant shape works best?

Domes and saucers work best for task light because they push light straight down onto the counter. Glass globes give a softer, wider glow that also lights faces. Textured shades add character when the rest of the kitchen is plain.

  • Dome. The classic brass kitchen pendant. A Stanton or Barclay dome gives a clear pool of light with no glare.
  • Saucer. Wide and low, ideal for an 8 foot ceiling. Try the Degraw Spun Brass Pendant with its fine spun lines.
  • Globe. Soft, even light for kitchens that double as living space. Browse our globe and opal glass lighting.
  • Textured. Hammered, pleated or scalloped metal like the Huron pendant shown below. See all pleated, scalloped and hammered brass.

Linear pendant or a row of pendants?

Choose a linear pendant for a long, narrow island or a minimal kitchen. Choose a row of separate pendants when you want more presence and more flexibility in spacing.

A linear fixture needs only one junction box, which can simplify installation in an existing ceiling. A good rule is to keep it about 12 inches shorter than the island overall. The Madison and the Roxbury Brass Linear Pendant both follow the line of a counter with a single canopy. Separate pendants, on the other hand, let you play with shape and rhythm.

Which finish for a brass kitchen pendant?

Unlacquered brass is a favorite for kitchens because it ages with the room. If you prefer a finish that stays the same, choose polished brass.

Every Yore light is offered in four finishes: unlacquered brass, polished brass, black and chrome. Our photos show the unlacquered finish. For a darker, older kitchen, browse our vintage and antique brass lighting. If your hardware is black, a pendant that pairs both tones ties the room together, as you will see in our black and brass lighting. Not sure brass will date? Our article on whether brass light fixtures are in style has the answer. Our guide to brass vs gold explains why real brass looks richer than gold paint.

Should island pendants match the dining light?

Island pendants and the dining light should relate, not match. Use the same metal and finish, then vary the shape or the scale.

In an open plan room, three domes over the island and a pleated globe over the table read as one family. Keep both in unlacquered brass and they will age together. Look through our dining room pendant lights and brass chandeliers to pair them.

Frequently asked questions

How many pendants over a kitchen island?

Two or three for most islands. Use three on an island of 7 to 9 feet, two on a shorter one and consider a linear pendant on anything longer.

How far apart should pendant lights be over an island?

About 24 to 36 inches center to center. Divide the island into equal sections and hang one pendant at the center of each.

How high to hang pendants over an island?

The bottom of the shade should sit 30 to 36 inches above the counter. Go toward the higher end with a taller ceiling.

Can I use a brass pendant over kitchen island seating with a low ceiling?

Yes. Choose a low saucer or a compact dome and keep the bottom of the shade near 30 inches above the counter.

Does unlacquered brass hold up in a kitchen?

Yes. It darkens faster near heat and moisture, which many people love. A gentle polish brings back the shine whenever you want it.

Should all the pendants over an island be the same?

Usually yes. Matching pendants keep the line calm. Save contrast for the dining light or the wall sconces.
