Sputnik Chandelier Guide: History, Sizes and How to Style It

Brass sputnik chandelier with glass globes hanging over a dining table

Quick answer: A sputnik chandelier is a mid century light with arms radiating from a central sphere, named after the 1957 satellite. Choose a diameter about half to two thirds of your table width and hang it 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop.

The sputnik chandelier is the rare light that looks like a sculpture even when it is switched off. Its starburst of slim arms has lit dining rooms since the late 1950s and it still feels fresh in a modern home. This guide covers what defines the shape, how to size and hang one and how to style a brass sputnik chandelier in every room.

What is a sputnik chandelier?

A sputnik chandelier is a ceiling light built around a central hub with straight arms reaching out in every direction. Each arm ends in a bulb, a glass globe or a small shade. Seen from below, it reads as a burst of light rather than a solid mass.

Three details set it apart from a classic chandelier:

  • The hub. A sphere or small cylinder sits at the center and holds every arm.
  • The arms. They are straight and thin. They point outward in three dimensions, not only sideways.
  • The open frame. There is no bowl, cage or drum. You see through the fixture to the ceiling.

That open frame is why the shape works in so many rooms. It has presence without visual weight. If you want the same mid century spirit with moving parts, look at our mobile chandeliers and counterweight pendants.

Where did the mid century sputnik chandelier come from?

The mid century sputnik chandelier takes its name from Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite. It was launched on October 4, 1957 as a polished metal sphere with four long antennas. The image was everywhere and designers of the space age borrowed its sphere and rods for lamps, clocks and chandeliers.

The look belongs to mid century modern design, a style most popular from roughly 1945 to 1970. Atomic forms, clean lines and honest materials defined the era. Brass was a favorite metal because it glows warmly and is easy to shape into slender arms.

Today a mid century brass chandelier fits far beyond retro homes. It sits comfortably in a prewar apartment with plaster moldings or a new build with white walls. For more on why brass keeps coming back, read are brass light fixtures in style.

Sputnik chandelier size: how big should it be?

Sputnik chandelier size depends on the room and on the table below it. Because the frame is open, you can go a little larger than you would with a solid drum. Start with the room, then check against the table.

For a room, add its length and width in feet. The total is a good diameter in inches. A 12 by 14 foot dining room gives 26, so look at a chandelier around 26 inches wide.

Room size Room math Suggested diameter
10 x 10 ft 10 + 10 = 20 18 to 22 in
12 x 12 ft 12 + 12 = 24 22 to 26 in
12 x 16 ft 12 + 16 = 28 26 to 30 in
14 x 18 ft 14 + 18 = 32 30 to 36 in
16 x 20 ft or open plan 16 + 20 = 36 36 in or more

Over a table, the chandelier should span about half to two thirds of the table width. Keep at least 6 inches between the tips of the arms and each edge of the table so nobody bumps a globe when standing up.

Table Width Sputnik diameter
Round table for 4 36 to 42 in 20 to 28 in
Round table for 6 48 to 54 in 26 to 36 in
Round table for 8 60 in 30 to 40 in
Rectangular table for 6 36 to 40 in wide 20 to 26 in
Rectangular table for 8 to 10 42 to 44 in wide 24 to 30 in

A long rectangular table often looks best with two smaller fixtures or one linear fixture. Our full guide on what size chandelier for your dining table walks through every shape. Large rooms can take a full size fixture like the Flatlands Brass Opal Globe Sputnik Chandelier, which spreads nineteen opal globes across 51 inches.

How high should you hang a sputnik chandelier?

Hang a sputnik chandelier so its lowest point sits 30 to 36 inches above a dining table on an 8 foot ceiling. Add about 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling height. Over open floor, keep at least 7 feet between the bottom of the fixture and the floor.

Ceiling height Over a table Over open floor
8 ft 30 to 32 in above the table Use a semi flush mount
9 ft 33 to 35 in above the table 7 ft clearance
10 ft 36 to 38 in above the table 7 to 7.5 ft clearance
12 ft and up 38 to 42 in above the table 8 ft clearance or more

Most of our sputnik chandeliers can be ordered with extra drop length of 12, 24 or 36 inches, which helps with tall or vaulted ceilings. Choose the drop when you order so the rod arrives at the right length.

Sputnik chandelier dining room ideas

The dining room is the natural home of the sputnik. The shape draws the eye to the center of the table and spreads light toward every seat. A few ideas that work:

  • Round table, round light. A sputnik echoes the circle of a round table perfectly. Center it over the table, not the room.
  • Warm wood. The Walker Brass Sputnik Chandelier pairs brass arms with natural wood for a softer mid century note.
  • Color. Tinted glass globes add a jewel tone that picks up art or upholstery. See our colored glass and shades.
  • A quieter glow. Opal globes soften the light at dinner and flatter faces across the table.

Put the chandelier on a dimmer. A bright setting helps on homework nights and a low one makes dinner feel calm.

Can a sputnik chandelier work in a living room or entry?

Yes. In a living room, a sputnik chandelier becomes the focal point that a sofa and rug arrange themselves around. Center it in the room or over the coffee table and keep 7 feet of clearance below. Add lamps and sconces around the edges so the chandelier is not doing all the work.

In an entry or stair hall, the open frame lets light pass through to the floor below. A two story foyer can take a large fixture with extra drop length. For a hallway or a room with a lower ceiling, the Eldridge Brass Sputnik Semi-Flush Mount keeps the same starburst close to the ceiling. See more in our hallway lighting.

In a bedroom, center the fixture in the room rather than over one side of the bed. A smaller sputnik or a semi flush version keeps the room restful.

Glass globes, crystal or shades: which sputnik style?

The arm ends decide the mood of the fixture. Pick them for the light you want as much as for the look.

If you prefer a fuller shape, the Speonk Brass Opal Globe Cluster Chandelier gathers its opal globes into one round cluster. It suits rooms where a wide sputnik would feel too large.

Which finish suits a brass sputnik chandelier?

A brass sputnik chandelier comes in four finishes at Yore: unlacquered brass, polished brass, black and chrome. Every light is solid brass underneath, never plated steel. If you want to check a fixture you already own, see how to tell if brass is real.

Finish Look over time Pairs well with
Unlacquered brass Deepens to a soft patina Marble, walnut, plaster walls
Polished brass Bright gold shine Black lacquer, high contrast rooms
Black Graphic and crisp White walls, industrial spaces
Chrome Cool and reflective Gray palettes, marble baths

Unlacquered brass is our signature. It warms and darkens slowly as it meets air and touch. Read what is unlacquered brass to see how the patina forms. A gold sputnik chandelier look comes from polished or unlacquered brass, while a sputnik chandelier in black reads as pure graphic line. For black paired with brass, browse black and brass lighting.

How to style a modern sputnik chandelier

A modern sputnik chandelier looks best when the room around it stays simple. Let it be the one sculptural gesture and keep everything else calm.

  • Repeat the circle. A round table, a round mirror or a globe sconce ties the room together.
  • Mix old and new. A sputnik over a farmhouse table or a set of vintage chairs keeps it from feeling like a period set.
  • Match warm metals. Pick up the brass in a picture light, a lamp base or cabinet hardware.
  • Choose warm bulbs. 2700K bulbs flatter brass and skin tones. Many arms means many bulbs, so a dimmer matters.
  • Mind the scale. In a small room, choose fewer arms or a semi flush version rather than shrinking every other piece.

Frequently asked questions

Are sputnik chandeliers still in style?

Yes. The shape has stayed popular for decades because it is sculptural and light at the same time. In brass it feels warm rather than retro.

What size sputnik chandelier do I need for a 60 inch round table?

Look at a diameter between 30 and 40 inches. That leaves room between the arms and the edge of the table.

How many bulbs does a sputnik chandelier need?

It depends on the model, since each arm usually holds one bulb. Low wattage LED bulbs keep the total light comfortable, especially on a dimmer.

Can I put a sputnik chandelier in a room with an 8 foot ceiling?

Yes, over a table where nobody walks underneath. Over open floor, a semi flush sputnik is the safer choice.

How do you clean a brass sputnik chandelier?

Turn off the power, let the bulbs cool and dust each arm with a soft dry cloth. For a deeper clean, follow our guide on how to clean brass without removing the patina.

Is a sputnik chandelier hard to install?

It installs like any hanging fixture with a canopy and rod. Because of its spread, it is easier with two people. A licensed electrician should make the connection.
