How high to hang pendants over a kitchen island

Hang pendants so the bottom of the shade sits 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. With ceilings higher than 9 feet, add about 3 inches for every extra foot so the fixtures still feel connected to the island.

How many pendants for your island

  • Island up to 6 feet: 2 pendants, or 1 linear chandelier.
  • Island from 6 to 8 feet: 3 pendants, or 1 linear chandelier.
  • Island over 8 feet: 3 or 4 pendants, or 2 linear fixtures.

How far apart to space them

Leave about 6 inches between the outer pendants and the ends of the island and 24 to 30 inches between pendants, measured center to center. Wider shades need more room: keep at least 6 inches between the edges of two shades.

Choosing the right size

For three pendants, a shade diameter of 10 to 14 inches suits most islands. For one or two pendants, choose 14 to 20 inches. A linear chandelier should be about two thirds the length of the island.

Why solid brass in the kitchen

Brass warms the light it reflects, which makes wood, stone and food look their best. Unlacquered brass slowly takes on a patina that sits naturally next to brass taps and cabinet hardware.

Kitchen island lighting FAQ

Should island pendants match the dining room lighting?

They do not need to match. Repeating the same brass finish or the same shape is enough to tie an open plan together.

Pendants or a linear chandelier?

Pendants give a rhythm and work on any island length. A linear chandelier gives one continuous line of light and suits long islands and modern kitchens. See our brass linear chandeliers.

What bulb color is best over an island?

Warm white bulbs at 2700K to 3000K keep the kitchen welcoming, with enough brightness for prep work. Add a dimmer to soften the light after dinner.
